Biological Dosimetry

At the Institute of Nuclear Physics, Polish Academy of Science, Krakow, Poland, the Department of Radiation
and Environmental Biology is ready to assist in the estimation of the effects of radiation on health of people
potentially contaminated as a result of a nuclear power plant accident in Japan. In the Laboratory we have
established several well described dose response curves (for X and gamma rays, protons and various energy neutrons)
with molecular and cytogenetic methods measuring various types of DNA or chromosomal damage. Results of our 20
years research in human monitoring field with cytogenetic tools, were followed by search for the cancer incidence
rate and were included in epidemiological survey granted by EC programs. Those results let us evaluate health and
cancer risk from exposure. The main biomarkers applied in our laboratory are based on:
1) Evaluation of the adsorbed dose on the base of:
- unstable chromosome aberration frequencies (dicentrics, rings, fragments detected with the microscope
conjugated with an automatic metaphase finder)
- frequency of micronuclei (MN)
- stable chromosome aberration - translocations (analyzed with FISH)
2) DNA repair competence (with SCGE assay) - fast method to select individuals at the highest risk of
harmful health risk of radiation exposure and stratify into the groups within the range of doses 0.5 - 5Sv.
In our laboratory facility in the 2008 year was created, under the support from Polish National Atomic Agency,
a special practical laboratory section for rapid retrospective biological dosimetry. In case of emergency,
this section with a small support allows us to investigate samples from 40-50 donors in one day of experimental
work.
Since 11th of March, 2011 in the Department of Radiation and Environmental Biology, are permanently going on
with measurements controlling genotoxic quality of ambient air in Krakow (with well known plant bioindicator
Trad-SH and Trad-MN systems). Any increase in mutation rate in somatic cells can be immediately compared and
evaluated according to standardizing dose response curves for various types of radiation, estimated and own
by our Department. The background level and results of first measures will be displayed on our homepages:

March 12, 2011 - Response from Japan !
|
Dear Gianfranco and all IARR members,
I have been contacted by a number of foreign radiation researchers on the earthquake we had yesterday,
and this is to let you know that most of our community members are OK although we are still unable to contact
some radiation community members of northern cities due to the telephone line congestion.
The earthquake was the biggest one in the past 150 years, and additional trouble was the explosion of one
nuclear facility with release of radioactive nuclides including iodine.
This is the worst earthquake disaster in our history.
I thank you all for your kind concern.

January 9 - 22, 2011 - Prof. Antonina Cebulska-Wasilewska visit to Brussels, Belgium
|
Prof. Antonina Cebulska-Wasilewska (President of 14th ICRR)
during her stay in Brussels has managed, between the EC (FP7) Evaluation Meetings, to contact the NATO Headquarters, and to present to
Dr. Walter Kaffenberger (Programme Director, Outreach Countries Section NATO Public Diplomacy Division)
with words of gratitude dedication, the book "Rapid Diagnosis in Populations at Risk from Radiation and Chemicals", NATO Science for Peace and
Security Series. This monographic book has resulted mainly from lecturers of NATO ATC RADIPER organized in the year of celebration of the NATO 60
Jubilee and under the promotion of the 14th ICRR (http://natoatcradiper.org).
Dr Walter Kaffenberger, the great personality, former radiobiologist, always thoughtful,
warm and friendly in his assistance was enormously helpful in the organization of this scientific training.
